At vet clinics around the globe, hero dogs are donating blood to help other dogs. Dog blood donations are similar to human blood donations, and every donation can help rescue up to four dogs in need.
Not every dog is able to become a donor, however. Your dog must be over 25kg to donate blood in order for the donation not to impact their own health, and donor dogs must be between one and eight years old. Like humans, dogs have different blood types, most vital of which is negative blood, as it can be given to any dog in an emergency.
Breeds including German Shepherds, Dobermanns, Greyhounds, Lurchers, and Old English Sheepdogs are more likely to have this blood type, which only 30% of dogs have, according to Pet Blood Bank, UK.
Since seeing a notice at their vet’s office in England, Mandie Pannell and her partner, Thomas Mills, have now taken their five-year-old cat, Weasley, to donate 10 times and six-year-old English pointer, Spock, five times.
As any dog knows, the best part of the process is the treats at the end.
